The Jailer & His Daughter: A Novel of Finding Faith and Love Through Adversity

Kirsten L. Klassen

  • 1800

A powerful reimagining of the aftermath of Dirk Willems’ legendary act of mercy—told through the eyes of the jailer and his daughter.

Most of what we know of the story of Dirk Willems is a few brief paragraphs about how he turned back to save the life of his jailer and was then arrested and executed for heresy. This novel explores another side of the story: what life might have been like for the jailer after this life-transforming experience. How might the jailer and his daughter have felt about the debt of gratitude they owed Dirk Willems? And, to what lengths might they have been willing to go to explore their faith questions in such a dangerous time? (319pp. Masthof Press, 2026.)

Meaningful & Engaging

The Jailer and His Daughter by Kirsten Klassen is a story that quietly pulls you in and doesn’t let go. With rich historical detail and deeply human characters, Klassen brings a powerful story of courage, faith, and redemption. The emotional depth and smooth dialogue feel real, never forced. But what stands out most is how personal the story feels—you’re not just reading it, you’re experiencing it. The relationships are genuine, you can feel how high the stakes are, and the overall message lingers long after the final page.
If you’re looking for something meaningful, engaging, and easy to get lost in, this one’s definitely worth reading.

A remarkable read!

The moment I started “The Jailer and his Daughter” I was engaged. I wasn’t just reading this book, I was experiencing this book. I was held in it’s grip, watching and holding my breath as Dirk was dying, feeling the wind change direction, joining with others to block the wind in the hope of shortening his suffering.

Then, invited as a silent guest into the family of Pieter, Fenna, Hans and their extended family and community, I found myself reminded that I come from people like this. People of deep faith, earnest, hard working, loving people. Included both as witness and recipient of the acts of grace, deepening intimacies and risks taken to “become”, I have been made stronger by this book.

As I neared the end, I couldn’t read it slowly enough. I didn’t want to say “goodbye”. I wanted to remain a part of this struggling, evolving, daring family.

Pick this book up, read it, let it move you to think about what you would burn at the stake for. How would it change you if a stranger, your enemy even, lost their life to save yours? What is your capacity for acceptance and compassion towards those you love and those you struggle to love?

We need books that make us think and feel in these ways now more than ever.
