Bishop Jacob Mast and Magdalena Hooley: Early Amish Settlers of the Conestoga Valley

Dorothy (Mast) Moss

  • 1800

This book features information about Mast genealogy in Switzerland and a chapter about Jacob and Magdalena as they settled in the Conestoga Valley near Elverson, Pennsylvania. The successful search for the Mast land along the Blue Mountains is documented in the story about Uncle Johannes who brought the orphaned Mast children to America in 1750. Twelve articles about the sons and daughters of Jacob and Magdalena published in Mennonite Family History are included with updates about the first three generations of Bishop Jacob Mast descendants born in America. Information about Jacob’s siblings including Anna married to John Yoder, Magdalena married to Michael Troyer, and John married to Barbara [Harmon] is included with lists of their children. The children of Jacob and Magdalena married into Hooley, Hostetler, Kauffman (Coffman), Kenege, Kurtz, and Zook families. Besides the Conestoga Valley, the descendants of Jacob and Magdalena were significant contributors to Amish settlements in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and Holmes County, Ohio. Cemetery information is included for each of the children and grandchildren of Jacob and Magdalena. (108pp. color illus. index. Masthof Press, 2026.)

Beautiful and helpful book

This is a very beautiful book covering primarily the family history of Bishop Jacob Mast MS14 and his wife Magdalena Hooley HLJ41. I am very interested in the book because of the very excellent background material on the Mast Family in Europe and their travel to America. Jacob's sister Anna Mast MS12 is my ancestor.
There are nice pictures throughout the book showing farms, cemeteries, family members, maps, and other items of interest. I especially liked the maps of the surveys of the land warrants. Copies of historical documents are also shown. I think I can read parts of some of them. Some of them I can't read.
The story of the family coming to America is very interesting with many details that would be lost to history without this book. I am sure that other families had similar experiences on their journey to America.
There is an index of names included in the book.
I strongly recommend any member of the Mast Family or any person with Mast ancestry acquire this book.

Anxious to read...Didn't know my mother's ancestry was Amish and Mennonite. My Great Grandmother was a 'Hochstetler'. Our church was EUB, which appears to be an off branch of either Amish or Mennonite.
