Mennonites in Crisis

Lester Burkholder

  • 1295

This is an historical novel based on experiences Anabaptist Mennonite families faced during the Revolutionary War as non-associaters. All the people and happenings portrayed are historically correct, including their positions in life, their properties and their historical applications. The main character Henry Martin lived on a farm along the Conestoga Creek in Lancaster Co., Pa. He and his family and friends faced extreme trials for not taking part in the fighting. This is a well-documented account of this trying period of time in our Nation’s history. (154pp. illus. Author, 2015.)

Wonderful book!

I fear my words won’t begin to express how much I value this book. It was just what I was looking for - a window into how early family members lived during the revolutionary war period. The author gives the reader a front row seat in daily life and discussions that illuminated the beliefs, the context and actions.

And then the descriptions of daily living were wonderful. The Conestoga wagon and six draft horses, fetching cream from the spring house, telling time by the sunlight hitting marks on the floor when the front door opens… and many others throughout that help your heart as you also read what these families endured.
