As the movement spread north it fell into the hands of “erring leaders” and a branch took an apocalyptic and violent turn. Menno, son of Simon, a 39-year-old Catholic priest in Witmarsum, Friesland was attracted by the core tenets of Anabaptism but abhorred the practice of violence in God’s name. Leaving the priesthood, he became a homeless and hunted man as he aligned himself with a peace practicing branch of Anabaptists, eventually becoming the leader of and giving his name to the Church.
