A Living History with Author Chris Yohn

Before the Pages

We often wonder about the history inside the books on our shelves, but rarely about the history of the person who wrote them. Today, we're delighted to welcome Chris Yohn, writer of the powerful book, Liberty’s Land, to our author feature series.
Chris’s work is a masterclass in "living history," a genre that bridges the gap between meticulous research and immersive storytelling. Growing up along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, his fascination with the American Revolution was nurtured through childhood visits to battlefields and museums. Today, he uses his background as a classically trained actor and musician to bring the forgotten heroes of the Pennsylvania frontier to life, inviting readers to witness the Revolution alongside those who lived it.
A Decades-Long Detective Story: Uncovering the West Branch
For Chris, writing Liberty’s Land wasn't just a creative project; it was a decades-long mission to reclaim a "fragmented and mysterious" history. While most students of the Revolution focus on the coastal battles of General Washington, Chris found himself drawn to the obscure markers and scant records of the Susquehanna Valley. What began as curiosity evolved into a deep historical investigation into the outsized influence frontier residents had on the war's outcome.
Through cross-referencing sparse local records, Chris uncovered an astonishing reality: without the West Branch residents ensuring Fort Augusta never fell, the interior of the state could have collapsed, leaving Washington trapped between two armies. His research even revealed a high-level traitor in the Tory universe—a man so influential he served as Benedict Arnold’s personal envoy.
"I trusted I was going to find a good story at the end of my research. But, nothing prepared me for what I eventually discovered... these heroes played major roles in the conflict despite being located out of the limelight on the very fringes of most people’s awareness."
Drawing inspiration from Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels, Chris eschewed the dry tone of a traditional textbook. Instead, he utilized dialogue and atmospheric detail to ensure readers could feel the tension of the frontier, witnessing the courage, espionage, and pursuit of liberty that forged a nation founded on the radical idea that all people are created equal.
The Natural Extension of the Actor’s Craft
The transition from the stage to the page was a natural evolution for Chris. As a professional actor, musician, and communications manager, he has always viewed a well-written script as a launchpad for creation. He found that the collaboration between writer and actor to manifest a character is strikingly similar to the process of unravelling historical figures from archives.
Despite the complexity of his research, Chris found that immersing himself in the world of his ancestors prevented the common hurdle of writer's block. He often found himself "running to the keyboard" to pour out the voices of those he discovered in his research.
"The crossover to writing from acting was, for me, a natural one... and one I was surprised to find perhaps even more creative."
His dedication to accuracy has already led to features in the Journal of the American Revolution and the Dispatches podcast. Chris credits the supportive and collaborative team at Masthof for helping him navigate his debut publishing experience, turning years of "detective work" into a polished, professional narrative.
Life Beyond the Pages: Preserving a Perfect Union
When he isn't documenting the frontier, Chris lives in Virginia and remains a deep believer in the preservation of history—both the heroic and the uncomfortable. As an active member of the Sons of the American Revolution, he devotes significant energy to honoring Patriot ancestors and promoting awareness of the sacrifices required to attain and preserve freedom.
In his personal time, Chris enjoys the simpler side of life: gardening, playing his guitar, and taking day trips to historic sites and battlefields with friends and family. It is this combination of personal passion and professional discipline that makes Liberty's Land such a vital addition to the story of America.
His hope for his readers is a simple but profound one: that the heroes of the West Branch finally take their rightful place in American history, and that we remember the ongoing evolution of freedom they set in motion.
Chris Yohn’s journey, shaped by immersion in living history and a relentless pursuit of truth, is a powerful testament to the value of reclaiming our shared past. His novel, Liberty’s Land, is more than a war story; it's a window into the "detective story" of the American frontier and the courage of everyday people who risked everything for equality.
