The Heartfelt Mission of Author Sharon Kuepfer

Posted by Stephanie Good on

Before the Pages

We often wonder about the history inside the books on our shelves, but rarely about the history of the person who wrote them. Today, we're honored to welcome Sharon Kuepfer, author of the Little Prairie Girl set, which includes best-sellers Little Prairie Girl and Little Pennsylvania Dutch Boy, and her latest release, Love Covers, to our author feature series.

Sharon’s writing journey is deeply intertwined with her Canadian roots and a lifelong passion for storytelling. From getting her first poem published at age fourteen to becoming a teacher and a prolific novelist, Sharon has dedicated her life to capturing the stories of faith and resilience that define her family heritage. Whether she is writing for children or documenting the life of her grandfather in Russia, her mission remains the same: to pass down stories of love to the next generation.

A Mission of Memory: Understanding Roots

For Sharon, writing family history is more than a creative pursuit; it is an act of discovery. In researching her family legacy series, she was surprised to find that understanding her ancestors helped her understand herself. By gathering facts from diaries, family books, and interviews with aunts and uncles, she pieces together a narrative tapestry that she calls being "on a mission."

All of Sharon’s stories are based on true accounts, meticulously researched before being woven into a compelling narrative. Her recent book, Love Covers, explores her grandfather’s life in Russia, while other works delve into the emotional weight of family loss and expectation. Her goal is to inspire readers to reflect on their own lives through the lens of those who came before them.

"My family heritage stories are so fun to write, because it's like I'm on a mission. It's fun getting all the facts I can... where I try to stay organized where I keep all these things!"

From Homeschooling to "Little Prairie Girls"

Sharon’s early career as a teacher and her years of homeschooling her own children provided the spark for her first published books. Works like Homeschooling Moments and There's No Place Like Home flowed naturally from her experiences. Since then, her library has grown to include the nine-book Little Prairie Girl set, capturing the imagination of young readers across the globe.

Beyond fiction, Sharon has collaborated with Masthof to publish 30 Days to Discover the Genius in your Child, a self-help guide designed to help parents and educators nurture the unique interests of children. Even with such a diverse bibliography, Sharon avoids writer’s block through a simple, disciplined rule: she writes even when she isn't in the mood, even if it is just a single sentence to keep the momentum going.

"The inspiration for my books is to pass the stories of love and faith down the generations, first to my children and grandchildren, then to whoever else wants to read them!"

Life Beyond the Pages: Ministry and Watercolor

While writing is a significant part of her life, Sharon is equally driven by her calling in Kenora, Ontario. She and her husband are deeply involved in jail ministry, where she leads weekly Bible studies for women. This commitment to service is the cornerstone of her life in northern Ontario.

In her personal time, Sharon stays active and creative. You might find her attending watercolor classes or engaging in her newest hobby: pickleball. Whether she is holding a paintbrush, a paddle, or a pen, Sharon’s life is defined by a vibrant spirit of growth and a desire to encourage others to find their own genius.

Sharon Kuepfer’s journey, shaped by ancestral memory and a heart for service, is a beautiful testament to the power of stories to connect us across generations.
