The Spiritual Journey and Ministry of Dr. Henry G. Covert

Posted by Stephanie Good on

Before the Pages

We often wonder about the history inside the books on our shelves, but rarely about the history of the person who wrote them. Today, we're happy to welcome Dr. Henry G. Covert, a prolific author and ordained pastor, to our "Before the Pages" author feature series to share the story behind his extensive ministry and writing career.

Dr. Covert’s work is a beautiful example of accessible theology, a space that bridges the gap between deep academic scholarship and practical, everyday faith. Originally born in Philadelphia, his lifelong dedication to understanding the spiritual journey was shaped by profound theological voices like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Sören Kierkegaard. Today, he channels that same focus on deep reflection, compassion, and discipleship into his own writing, inviting readers to move beyond standard commentary and experience a lived, transformative relationship with the scriptures.

A MINISTRY EXTENDED THROUGH THE PEN

For many authors, writing is a hobby or a secondary pursuit. For Dr. Henry G. Covert, it is a fundamental extension of his calling. Presently residing in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, Dr. Covert’s life has been defined by service as an ordained pastor with the United Church of Christ, a state prison chaplain, and an adjunct instructor at Penn State University. With seven books published by Masthof Press, his work serves as a bridge between the pulpit and the printed page.

Dr. Covert’s inspiration is drawn directly from the lives of those he has served. "All of my ministries, recognizing the needs and struggles of parishioners," he explains when discussing what sparks a new book idea. By listening to the challenges of those in his care, he finds the themes that need addressing most: theology, spiritual development, and biblical education. For him, the writing process is a spiritual dialogue, often feeling as though God’s Word is speaking directly to him as he works to interpret the scriptures for a modern readership.

"I consider my books as an extension of my ministries, reaching a wider readership."

FINDING THE LIGHT IN RESEARCH

While many writers battle the infamous writer’s block, Dr. Covert faces a much more practical challenge: time. "A major challenge was finding time for research," he notes. Because his books are deeply rooted in biblical interpretation and theology, the academic and historical groundwork required is significant. Despite the time constraints, his mission remains clear and unwavering: to help his readers grow in the image of Jesus through love, forgiveness, and compassion.

This commitment to grace was profoundly shaped by a unique vantage point on the human condition. Before entering the ministry, Dr. Covert spent twenty years in law enforcement, serving as a patrol sergeant and a county detective. This extensive career in criminal justice provided a foundational understanding of human struggles, which later transitioned into one of the most impactful eras of his life: his tenure as a state prison chaplain. Drawing from both sides of the justice system, his dual perspective as an officer of the law and a shepherd of the spirit permeates books like Ministry to the Incarcerated and Discovering the Parables. His writing reaches far beyond the church pews, finding a home in universities, seminaries, and correctional ministries alike.

ON THE ROAD AND IN THE WORD

When he isn’t diving into theological research, Dr. Covert finds enjoyment in life in simpler ways. Whether he is walking, traveling, or enjoying the freedom of a motorcycle, these moments of reflection allow him to reset and recharge.

As Dr. Covert considers future writing projects, his goal remains the same: to reach a wider readership and provide a journey through the scriptures that offers both education and inspiration to Christians in general and those seeking a deeper spiritual life.

Dr. Henry G. Covert’s journey, shaped by a lifetime of pastoral care and a profound commitment to service, is a powerful testament to the value of reclaiming our shared spiritual paths. His extensive body of work is more than a collection of theological texts; it's a window into the "spiritual dialogue" of the human condition and the enduring grace available to everyday people seeking a deeper connection to God.
