The Human Spirit in Twentieth-Century Vietnam with Stephen Wasilewski

BEFORE THE PAGES

We often wonder about the history inside the books on our shelves, but rarely about the history of the person who wrote them. Today, we're happy to welcome Stephen Wasilewski to our author feature series to share his deep love for historical accuracy and human-centered storytelling to his powerful debut novel, The River Between Us.
Spanning decades of war, political upheaval, and personal sacrifice in twentieth-century Vietnam, Stephen's writing offers readers an intimate look into a transformative era. From French colonial rule through land reform, the Vietnam War, the fall of Saigon, and its aftermath, his novel follows two lifelong friends navigating hardship with grace and hope. Through meticulously detailed research and authentic character development, Stephen reminds us that behind every historical milestone are families, friendships, and dreams striving to survive.
BRIDGING THE CLASSROOM AND THE WRITING DESK
A former history teacher and full-time business owner raised in Ringtown and Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Stephen’s passion for bringing the past to life began in his high school English classes and continued into college, where he drafted his first book alongside a published friend. That early taste of creative dedication stayed with him through his years as a history teacher, where he constantly looked for ways to make historical events feel alive and relevant to his students.
The spark for The River Between Us came during his personal travels through Vietnam. While visiting the Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City, Stephen was profoundly moved by the harrowing accounts of hardship experienced by ordinary Vietnamese families during the land reform campaigns, military bombings, and major historical tragedies like Mỹ Lai. Wanting to honor their resilience, he committed to translating these historical realities into a deeply human narrative focused on connection, courage, and survival.
"I want readers to look beyond the events recorded in history books and recognize the individual lives behind them, the families separated, the dreams interrupted, and the people who found ways to survive despite unimaginable challenges. Ultimately, The River Between Us is a story about the strength of the human spirit."
UNCOVERING THE UNWRITTEN DETAILS OF THE PAST
To ensure the historical integrity of his manuscript, Stephen immersed himself in rigorous historical research, uncovering obscure military operations and historical nuances along the way. One of the most surprising discoveries during his research was Operation Popeye, a top-secret U.S. military weather modification program during the Vietnam War that seeded clouds with silver iodide to extend monsoon seasons and disrupt troop movements.
Aligning fictional character timelines across several decades of real-world history required extraordinary discipline. Stephen carefully tracked character ages, relationships, and major historical milestones, revising his manuscript nearly 300 times to guarantee total accuracy and emotional consistency throughout the generational narrative arc.
A PARTNERSHIP FOUND IN SHARED VISION
For Stephen, connecting with Masthof Press to publish The River Between Us was one of the most rewarding milestones of his creative journey. Knowing that the editorial team resonated with his vision and believed in the human story he spent years crafting gave him renewed confidence during the final polishing stages. The collaborative process reached its peak during the cover design phase, where his exact visual vision was captured on the very first draft, delivering a finalized design so spot-on that it required no further edits.
Outside of his publishing journey, Stephen maintains a highly disciplined routine that fuels both his personal well-being and his creative focus. Fitness plays an essential role in his daily life through boxing and strength training, helping him stay sharp and motivated. In addition, his love for international travel allows him to visit historical sites around the world firsthand, experiencing the diverse cultures and physical settings that inspire his writing.
While celebrating the release of his debut novel, Stephen is actively building his broader literary portfolio. He has already completed several other diverse manuscripts, including an unpublished historical fiction novel set in Ancient Greece titled The Last Lions of Thebes, which follows two brothers in the Sacred Band of Thebes, and a contemporary story about purpose and community titled The Pink Pedal. Today, he remains hard at work researching his next historical fiction project, which will take readers back to Ancient Greece during the transformative era of Alexander the Great.
Stephen Wasilewski’s journey, shaped by years of teaching history and traveling the world, is a compelling testament to the power of empathetic storytelling. Having grown deeply connected to those who endured famine, political persecution, and conflict, his novel is more than a historical account; it is a heartwarming and honest tribute honoring their struggles while highlighting their enduring courage, compassion, and resilience across generations.
